Electrical Safety Testing of Medical Devices (AS/NZS 3551)

This intensive course covers the principles and practice of electrical safety testing in accordance with AS/NZS 3551. It equips participants with the ability to evaluate medical equipment for electrical integrity, perform test-and-tag operations, and document results that satisfy hospital and regulatory standards.

Learning Focus

  • Understanding the intent and requirements of AS/NZS 3551
  • Device classification: Class I, Class II, and Applied Part types (B, BF, CF)
  • Performing insulation resistance, leakage current, and earth continuity tests
  • Operation of electrical safety analyzers (Fluke, Datrend, Rigel, etc.)
  • Interpreting pass/fail limits and recognising unsafe conditions
  • Creating and storing traceable test reports for compliance audits

Hands-On Practice

  • Participants will test a variety of real patient-connected devices including
  • monitors, pumps, defibrillators, and ventilators, following manufacturer
  • procedures. Each trainee will perform supervised testing, interpret results, and prepare compliant documentation aligned with AS/NZS 3551 Appendix D.

Outcome

  • Safely test and tag medical equipment to Australian standards
  • Identify and rectify electrical faults
  • Generate compliant, auditable safety reports
  • Implement standardised test programs in clinical environments
